5 Things To Know Before You Go Dress Shopping

Brush up on your bridal shopping basics and you’ll be happily prepared for a visit all about you and your gown!

Appointments Can Be Helpful

While you may get lucky and walk in when there are few people in the boutique, scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure that you’ll get a fitting room reserved and a bridal consultant’s undivided attention!

Shop For The Body You Have Now

No matter what your shape, knowing your body shape – pear, full, thin, petite – is the first step in finding the right dress. Even if you’re planning on dropping 15 pounds before your wedding, your frame isn’t going to completely change so it’s best to select a dress that looks amazing on the body you have when you are making your decision.

Call Ahead

Although we do carry a good selection of Alfred Angelo, Sophia Tolli, and Chic Nostalgia gowns in various sizes it’s helpful if you let us know ahead of time if you have a specific gown that you’ve been dying to try on, a specific size you are looking for, or a specific style. It never hurts to call ahead and ask questions so that you have peace of mind before coming in and so that we can help you find exactly what you’re looking for!

Undergarments Are Optional

At Merrime we do have a selection of bras available for clients to use when trying gowns on, and we do have Spanx shape wear for purchase. If you have a favorite strapless style or plan on wearing a particular body shaper, you are welcome to go ahead and bring it. You’ll ultimately need your gown-specific undergarments once you have your dress and go for alterations but not for your initial dress shopping appointment.

Pick Your Dress Team

We know it’s the most important dress you’ll ever wear, and you want to make sure it’s absolutely perfect. But sometimes having 10 different opinions makes it much harder to come to a consensus—and it can bring you farther away from what you actually want. You know your friends and family members best, so we encourage you to enlist your closest and most supportive ones to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown of your dreams and not feel excessive pressure. A great way to include a larger group of friends and family is once your dress arrives invite them along when you come in and try it on for the first time!
